A process is described for conducting acid-catalyzed conversion of feedstock comprising xylenes to product comprising xylene isomerization product. The latter product comprises contacting the feedstock at conversion conditions sufficient to convert the feedstock to the product with a catalyst. The catalyst comprises a zeolite composition prepared by a method comprising treating a crystalline zeolite having an initial silica-to-alumina mole ratio of at least 500 with an ammoniacal solution of an alkali metal aluminate for a period of time ranging from about 20 minutes to about 30 days at a temperature of from about 20/sup 0/C. to about 50/sup 0/C. and at a pH of at least 10.
