Coal production in the USSR rose by 12 million tons in 1988, to 772 million tons, an increase of 1.6 percent. This was a slight improvement over the 9 million ton increment (1.2 percent increase) achieved in 1987. Gross mine output (772 million tons) was reported as 18 million tons above the plan target, and even exceeded the extra obligation of 16 million tons imposed upon the industry last fall. Of the above-plan output, 7.3 million tons was comprised of coking coal. Officials in the coal industry are claiming that all of the above-plan production was achieved solely by higher productivity, which is becoming more widespread throughout the sector. As of August, only four associations out of the total of 52 in the Coal Ministry were lagging behind production targets, and this was only by a combined total of 200,000 tons. Data are given on the geographical distribution of coal production and on production by coal rank and type of mining.
