Review of the Soviet coal industry in 1986

Journal Article · · Int. Geol. Rev.; (United States)

Coal production in the USSR rose 3.4 percent in 1986 and reached a record level of 751 million tons. Production from individual basins are listed. Several problems in the industry are discussed. The output of coking coal may fall short of demand because commissioning of new underground capacity is slow. Coal preparation plants can only handle 44 percent of mined output. Existing rail lines will not be able to handle future production volumes. A 250-km coal slurry pipeline is under construction to alleviate some of the rail congestion. Developments at various large strip mining basins are described.
