Slurry pipelines gain support at all levels of government

Conference · · Pipe Line Ind.; (United States)

At the current 4.5Vertical Bar3< gross national product inflation rate, rail transportation costs will increase sixfold in 30 yr, putting slurry pipelines at an economic advantage with a 30Vertical Bar3< expected increase. Energy Transportation Systems Inc., which plans to construct a 1400 mi pipeline from Wyoming to the Gulf States area, is now gaining rights to cross under tracks of objecting railroad companies from owners of the subsurface land and from the courts. Pipeline companies in the Western States still have the problem of obtaining the water required for coal slurry processes. Although there are sufficient quantities of surface and underground water present, they are often legally unavailable for coal slurry pipelines.
