A discussion covering generally favorable comments on coal slurry lines made at the 3rd International Technical Slurry Transportation Conference (Las Vegas, Mar. 1978) includes comments by M. K. Udall (U.S. House Representatives) on legislation that he introduced (H.R. 1609) that would accord slurry lines the same status as railroads; by C. D. Beaman (TUCO Inc.) on the high current price of coal transport (sometimes twice the price of the coal itself) and on problems of slurrying and dewatering long slurry lines; by P. S. Souder (Gen. Res. Corp.) on projected tonnage of rail-delivered coal (437 and 731 million by 1985 and 2000, respectively) and of line-delivered coal (86 and 211 million by 1985 and 2000, respectively); by Williams Brothers Engineering Co. on the development of transport of coal in a mud-like suspension with solids contents up to 75Vertical Bar3<; and by A. E. Gontov (Gidrougol' Amalgamation) on Soviet developments in production and transport, e.g., a two-stage pump capable of a 900 cu m/hr throughput against a 320 m head and plans for slurry lines up to 5000 km long.
