Fight inflation: move coal by pipeline

Journal Article · · Interstate Oil Compact Comm. Com. Bull.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6542348
A comparative evaluation of moving coal via slurry pipelines versus coal transport by rail is presented. Slurry pipelines have several advantages over rail transport of coal, and among these are: (1) less labor requirement; (2) better energy efficiency; (3) favorable environmental aspects; and (4) the costs are relatively more protected from inflation. Other issues addressed in the analysis are the amount of water required for slurry pipelines, job losses in the railroad industry, and the present level of slurry pipeline technology. (JMT)
