Update: the U. S. asphalt import market. Is the window closing

Journal Article · · Energy Detente; (United States)

US dependency on asphalt imports fell dramatically in 1986, as latest statistics show. For importers and foreign exporters, this is a smaller window of opportunity; for US refiners producing asphalt, it's a reduction of a dangerous drain of market share. Meanwhile, the great coincidence of 23% reduction for the year 1986 in US asphalt imports corresponds to the same percentage increase in crude oil imports. Somewhere in that fact is an implication for US oil market protectionists concerned chiefly with reliance on foreign finished products. This issue also contains the following: (1) ED refining netback data for the US Gulf and West Coasts, Rotterdam, and Singapore for late February 1987; and (2) ED fuel price/tax series for various dates for countries of the Eastern Hemisphere. 4 figures, 4 tables.
