How to drill and complete marginal wells for profit

An interview with George O. Suman, Jr. of Completion Technology C., Houston, covered numerous well completion problems and how they may be solved. Wells requiring special attention include those with sensitive zones subject to severe damage during drilling and completion operations; those with low permeability zones requiring accurate and economic placement of stimulation treatments; those which are expensive due to offshore locations; those with deep geopressured reservoirs where specialized, more expensive products and services are required. Some of the specific problems discussed include inadequate primary cementing, productivity damage due to mud or cement filtrate invasion or particle damage or hole wall instability and sand production problems. Gravel packing, string and sand consolidation techniques are discussed. Effective consolidation depends on proper sequential placement of several fluids throughout the perforated interval. Additional care is required in providing clean systems and fluids, and for removing perforation debris and placing chemicals. Perforations being treated must not be plugged with pipe dope, rust, scale or mud and cement solids from tubulars and surface pumping equipment during injection. Carefully controlled rates and pressures must be used to avoid diverting treatments.
