Guidelines to sand control. Part. 1

Preparation of a well for sand control by consolidation is considered to be more critical than is preparation for any other process which may be applied. Whether a well is to be consolidated, packed or produced with a screen, the cementing job is important. Perforating should be as selective as possible. Only zones indicating productivity should be perforated. Within reason, the shortest possible intervals should be perforated. A low density of perforations per foot should be maintained. Fluid across the interval at the time of perforating should be clear, containing no solids. The exposed face of the formation and the perforation passage leading to the formation should be adequately cleaned to provide unrestricted access to the formation. The washing techniques usually employ reverse circulation. If multiple intervals are to be treated with consolidating fluids, they should be isolated with packers and/or bridge plugs if spacing permits. Consolidation treatments in formations with excessive amounts of clay require special handling. Older wells which have produced an appreciable amount of sand should be packed prior to consolidation.
