Amoco Production Co.'s engineers developed several innovative drilling and completion techniques in an effort to bring some of the most prolific producers in the Gulf of Mexico on stream. Amoco not only had to drill through unconsolidated sands and geopressured formations, but had to design completion equipment and procedures for sand and well control. Located approximately 90 miles southeast of Galveston, Tex., the field spans three adjoining blocks - A-531, A-536, and A-537 - in the High Island south addition. A discussion is presented of the development drilling problems, initial completion operations, mud cleanout, perforating, washing perforations, fluid loss and gravel packing.
