The perovskite-type ceramic LaCr/sub 1-//sub x/Cu/sub x/O/sub 3/ was prepared by the solid-state reaction or the coprecipitation method in the range of 0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.5. X-ray diffraction, and electrical and some optical measurements were performed to examine the crystal structure and other physical properties. In this range, all samples show p-type semiconducting properties, and the transport mechanism is attributed to a hopping of a small polaron. The conductivity increases and the activation energy decreases as the concentration of Cu increases. At low temperatures, electrical properties show a variable range hopping caused by the Anderson localization mechanism. According to the activation energy dependence of the Cu concentration, we suggest that the virtual insulator-metal transition occurs at the critical concentration x/sub c/ = 0.77.
