Substitution of Y for Ca in the high T/sub c/ superconductor system Bi/sub 4/Sr/sub 3/Ca/sub 3-//sub x/Y/sub x/Cu/sub 4/O/sub 16+//sub delta/ (0less than or equal toxless than or equal to1.5) is accompanied by an increase in oxygen concentration deltaapprox. =0.34+0.3x that is insufficient to compensate for the increase in counter-cation valence. Nevertheless, T/sub c/approx. =86 K remains nearly constant in the interval 0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.5; it drops smoothly to zero in the interval 0.5
