Generation and reactions of chiral, pyramidal, transition-metal Lewis acids of the formula ((eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/))/sup +/X/sup -/

The synthesis of BF/sub 4//sup -/ and PF/sub 6//sup -/ complexes of the pyrimidal coordinatively unsaturated cation ((eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/))/sup +/ is described. Reactions that illustrate the utility of these compounds as precursors to a variety of complexes of the types ((eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/)(L))/sup +/ and (eta/sup 5/-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/)(X) are also presented. Proof is presented for the generation of these compounds in enatiometrically pure form providing the first observable transition-metal Lewis acids that are optically active and have metal-centered chirality. 16 references, 2 figures.
