Unprecedented regiospecificity and stereospecificity in reactions of Ph/sub 3/C/sup +/PF/sub 6/- with rhenium alkyls of the formula (eta-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/)(CH/sub 2/R)

The reaction of the rhenium alkyls (eta-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/)-(CH/sub 2/C/sub 6/H/sub 5/), (eta-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/)(CH/sub 2/CH/sub 3/), and (eta-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/)(CH/sub 2/CH/sub 2/CH/sub 3/) with Ph/sub 3/C+PF/sub 6//sup -/ to result in high yields of insoluble cationic alkylidene complexes ((eta-C/sub 5/H/sub 5/)Re(NO)(PPh/sub 3/)(=CHR))/sup +/PF/sub 6/- despite the presence of ..beta..-hydrides in the second and third alkyls above are reported. Geometric isomers of these compounds arising from metal-carbon multiple bonding are reported. (BLM)
