This paper studies the oxidation of 2,6-dimethylphenol (I), 2,3,6-trimethylphenol (II), and 2,3,5-trimethylphenol (III) by hydrogen peroxide in the presence of lithium, sodium, and potassium polyvanadatomolybdates and polyvanadatotungstates. The results are presented on the repeated oxidation of trimethylphenols at 20 C with from five toten catalyst use cycles. A study of the catalytic activity of a series of lithium polyvanadatomolybdates with variable ratio of V and Mo indicate that the oxidation is catalyzed by V/sub 5//sup +/ ions. The kinetics of the reaction of methylphenols with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of catalysts indicates self-inhibition of the reaction.
