2,3,6- and 2,4,6-Trimethylphenols (TMPs) are intermediate products in the synthesis of trimethylhydroquinone, which is used in the production of Vitamin E. The mentioned TMP's can be obtained by vapor-phase alkylation of 3-methyl and 4-methylphenols (MPs) by methanol on different catalysts. One of the shortcomings of existing selective catalysts (Mg and Mn oxides) is the need to carry out the reaction at elevated temperatures. Vanadium catalysts make it possible to lower the temperature with high selectivity of o-methylation. In this work the authors studied alkylation and 3and 4-MPs by methanol in the presence of a V aluminophosphate compound, to determine the ratio of their reactivities.
