The original plutonium production reactors (B, D, and F) at the Hanford Site had shields consisting of alternative layers of ion and a high-density pressed wood product called Masonite. These same materials and designs also were used in the subsequent reactors (DR and H) construted before 1950. It was apparent that if additional production reactors were to be built, there would be a large economic incentive to establish an alternate shield design. Under the direction of R.L. Dickeman, a shield research program was undertaken at the Hanford Site in 1950. A major portion of the program was the experimental measurement of the attenuation characteristics of materials, including the effects caused by radiation and elevated temperatures. In addition, the program included the investigation of the structural porperties of Portland cement concretes that contained various high-density aggregates. This paper further summarizes early research and development efforts at the Hanford during the 1950's.
