RADIATION SHIELDING PROGRAM AT HANFORD
The radiation sources and interaction processes involved in the shielding problem are described briefly. The facilities used in the Hanford experimental shielding program are described, and some neutron measurements in concrete are given. A Multigroup Attenuation Code (MAC) was developed for shielding calculations, and comparison is made between calculated and experimental neutron fluxes and gamma doses in ferrophosphorus concrete and in alternate iron-masonite layers. Calculated neutron spectra are given for various places within the shield configuration. The MAC code was used to study the merits of various shield configurations, and results are given. Future research planned in the Hanford shielding program is outlined. (D.L.C.)
