Reagan and environmental protection: none of the laws will be untouchable

President Reagan's belief in the economic impact of environmental policies will likely lead to a reexamination and trimming of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulators to promote economic growth. How fast the new administration can establish a cost/benefit test to regulations will depend on how it decides to measure benefits and whether existing laws can be amended. Pressures for prompt action will come from Reagan's economic appointees and the conservative Heritage Foundation. Some environmentalists hope that the allocation of energy sources will benefit from a free-market approach, but they disagree with his order of priorities in emphasizing nuclear power and opening public lands for energy development.
