The development of what is believed to be a new type of water pumping, horizontal axis, fixed pitch, wind-turbine is reviewed. It is shown that the turbine, which employs multiple delta-wing like blades of triangular planform, develops maximum torque at zero rotor speed and produces a peak power coefficient approximately 20% greater than that produced by the best conventional multibladed rotors commonly used for water pumping applications. The use of a variable-stroke pump to attain better load matching is discussed briefly, and the benefits of using such a system are quantified. Brief descriptions are also included of two prototype turbines, one of 10.8 ft (3.3 m) diameter the other of 52.5 ft (16 m) diameter, which employ the newly developed concepts.
