The case for wind-turbine driven water pumps with adaptive load characteristics

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5844015
Methods are described that can be used for matching the load of a waterpumping wind-turbine to the output, over a range of wind-speeds, of a fixed-pitch wind turbine. Analytical results show that the annual performance of windturbine driven water pumpers can be improved very substantially, typically by about 100%, by the use of an adaptive pump load. A brief description is included of a 52.5 ft (16 m) diameter prototype water-pumping wind turbine incorporating both a new, and relatively efficient, form of fixed-pitch rotor and an automatic, hydro-mechanical, adaptive load system.
