A performance comparison of various wind-turbine types for powering water pumps

Experimentally obtained performances are compared for three types of small horizontal axis wind-turbine specifically intended for driving water pumps. The three types are; the classical American multibladed configuration, a delta-wing bladed rotor which utilises flat-plate blades of a sharp-edged delta-wing type and a relatively low solidity turbine, of Dutch origin, with curved blades. The main conclusions from the work are that, taking the best example of each type of turbine investigated, the Dutch design produced the highest power coefficient (0.43 at a tip speed ratio of 2.15) next came the delta-wing bladed turbine with a peak power coefficient of 0.39 at a tip speed ratio of 1.7. The best multibladed turbine had a maximum power coefficient of 0.32 at a tip speed ratio of approximately 0.9. When the comparison was based on the starting torque produced, assuming a common output shaft speed for all three types of machine at their maximum power coefficient, the order of preference was reversed.
