Construction of a 300,000 bbl/day propane-butane import terminal
Construction of a 300,000 bbl/day propane-butane import terminal near Sabine Pass, Tex., may begin in late 1978. Mobil Oil Corp., Northern Natural Gas Co., Texaco Inc., and Texas Eastern Corp. are participating in the project, which has won approval from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission to lay two 21 mi, 24 in. pipelines through a section of Sea Rim State Park. Pending receipt of other State and Federal permits, the $100 million terminal may be completed by 1981. The terminal will be located at the intersection of the Port Arthur canal and the Sabine Pass channel, 1.5 mi north of Sabine Pass. Two berths, which will accommodate the largest propane and butane tankers now under construction, are planned. The parallel 24 in. lines will move propane and butane to storage facilities at Big Hill salt dome. Storage capacity is expected to exceed 15 million bbl. Two 13 mi, 14 and 24 in, lines will move the liquids from Big Hill to lines near Fannett.
