The design features of high-volume natural gas liquids imports terminals, i.e., terminals that can unload natural gas liquids in the form of propane, butane-propane mixtures, butanes, and pentanes; terminals that can sustain an average unloading rate of at least 50,000 bbl/day for long periods of time; terminals that have one or more docks capable of providing safe berths of 52,000 cu m and larger ships; and terminals that can unload a single product at rates not less than 10,000 bbl/hr and have piping and storage facilities so designed that co-mingling of different products or mixtures is kept to a minimum during normal operations are discussed, based on Warren Petroleum Co. experiences. The discussion covers selecting or locating a site suitable for such facilities including the need for water depths of at least 45 ft at the dock; selection of onshore equipment for the efficient transfer of products from the ship's tanks into storage; and details of the expansion of the Warren gas terminal to an average throughput of 135,000 bbl/day with a maximum unloading rate of 15,000 bbl/hr; and the terminal's facilities and operation, including the 25 mi, 20 in. pipeline to salt dome underground storage facilities.
