The change to this type of coking charge was necessitated by an alteration in coal base in the Moscow region in 1979 and the need to incorporate lower grade but more accessible coals in the coking operation. Coals with 3.0 - 7.4% moisture were compacted at a pressure of 200 kgf cm/SUP/2 giving small pillow-shaped briquettes of volume 7 cm/SUP/3 and weight 8 g. Their shape and small size enable them to be fed onto the conveyor with the non-briquetted part of the charge. Their addition improves the bulk density of the charge. Experimental box-type coking was carried out, with a carbonization time of 14.5 h. The results showed that the use of a partly-compacted charge increased the M40 strength of the coke and reduced the M10 strength. The yield of +40mm coke was increased over that from a non-briquetted charge.
