Hospital pilot job may lead to 80 packaged cogeneration installations

Over 80 hospitals may install pre-packaged 500 kW cogeneration systems developed specifically for hospitals by Enertec Inc. of Dallas and Martin Cogeneration Systems of Topeka if a pilot project in a Houston hospital proves successful. The Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) and the Gas Research Institute were joint funders of the $569,000 test installation, but HCA will pay all the costs of future installations, which are estimated to cost $460,000. The systems provide 90-100% of hot water requirements over a nine-month period and 61% of electricity needs.
