In December 1984, a prototype natural gas-fueled 500-kW reciprocating engine cogeneration system went into service at the Medical Center Del Oro Hospital, in Houston, for a one-year operational field test. The packaged plant, developed by Martin Cogeneration Systems division of Martin Tractor Company, is expected to be a forerunner of similar installations in hospitals throughout the US - as well as in a number of other cogeneration applications. Plant design is tailored to the specific energy requirements of health-care facilities in the 100-300 bed range, but, say Martin application engineers, it is equally suitable for installations with similar energy requirements - including hotels, apartment blocks and office buildings. For the 258-bed Houston facility, the package is sized to supply all the hospital's hot water, about 60% to 70% of its electric power and up to 60% of the air-conditioning load.
