Hospital installs 600-kW cogeneration system

The East Orange (New Jersey) General Hospital is installing a 650 kW cogeneration system under a shared-savings arrangement. Based on a natural gas-fired reciprocating Caterpillar engine, the system should save $800,000 in avoided fuel costs in the next decade. The hospital specified the size and manufacturer of the engine before soliciting bids from vendors. The winning bid offered a 5 to 50% sliding scale percentage of the energy savings over the first 10 years, with the percentage increasing in increments of 5% each year. After the 10th year, the hospital's cost to purchase the equipment will fall 10% each year until the 20th year, when the hospital automatically gains ownership.
