A dependence of J /. psi. production in. pi. sup minus -nucleus collisions at 530 GeV/ c

The {ital A} dependence of the cross section for {ital J}/{psi} production was measured in the Feynman-{ital x} region 0.1{le}{ital x}{sub {ital F}}{le}0.8 with a 530-GeV/{ital c} {pi}{sup {minus}} beam. Thick targets of C, Al, Cu, and Pb were employed. Using the cross-section parametrization {sigma}={sigma}{sub 0}A{sup {alpha}}, we find {alpha}=0.85{plus minus}0.06. No statistically significant dependence of {alpha} on either {ital x}{sub {ital F}} or transverse momentum {ital p}{sub {ital t}} is observed.
