Production of {ital J}/{psi} and {psi}(2{ital S}) mesons in {pi}{sup {minus}}Be collisions at 515 GeV/{ital c}

We have studied the production of {ital J}/{psi} and {psi}(2{ital S}) charmonium mesons in 515 GeV/{ital c} {pi}{sup {minus}}Be collisions in the Feynman-{ital x} range 0.1{lt}{ital x}{sub {ital F}}{lt}0.8. {ital J}/{psi} mesons were detected via their decay into {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}, and {psi}(2{ital S}) mesons were studied in both the {mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}} and {ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}} decay modes. {ital J}/{psi} differential cross sections have been measured as functions of {ital x}{sub {ital F}},{ital p}{sup 2}{sub {ital T}}, and the cosine of the Gottfried-Jackson decay angle. We measure an inclusive {ital J}/{psi} cross section of {ital B}({ital J}/{psi}{r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}){sigma}({pi}{sup {minus}}Be{r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}+{ital X})/{ital A}= [9.3{plus_minus}0.1(stat){plus_minus}1.1(syst)] nb/nucleon for {ital J}/{psi}{ital x}{sub {ital F}}{approx_gt}0.1. Our results are compared with those from other experiments performed at lower beam energies. We also measure the differential {psi}(2{ital S}) cross section as a function of both {ital x}{sub {ital F}} and {ital p}{sup 2}{sub {ital T}}, and a {psi}(2{ital S}) inclusive cross section of {ital B}{bold (}{psi}(2{ital S}){r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{bold )}{sigma}{bold (}{pi}{sup {minus}}Be{r_arrow}{psi}(2{ital S})+{ital X}{bold )}/{ital A}=[7. 4{plus_minus}1.5(stat){plus_minus}1.2(syst)] nb/nucleon for {psi}(2{ital S}){ital x}{sub {ital F}}{approx_gt}0.1. The fraction of the inclusive {ital J}/{psi} yield due to {psi}(2{ital S}) meson decays is 0.083{plus_minus}0.017(stat) {plus_minus}0.013(syst), and the observed ratio of {psi}(2{ital S}) decay rates is {ital B}{bold (}{psi}(2{ital S}){r_arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}{bold )}/{ital B}{bold (}{psi}(2{ital S}){r_arrow}{mu}{sup +}{mu}{sup {minus}}{bold )} =30.2{plus_minus}7.2(stat){plus_minus}6.8(syst).
