The Trans-Alaska Pipeline, operated by the Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., has been completed and is moving crude oil 800 mi (1287 km) from the Prudhoe Bay Field, on the North Slope of Alaska, to Valdez, a year-round ice-free port in the southern coast of Alaska. A discussion covers the establishment of the joint venture by eight U.S. firms in 1968, the route of the line; right-of-way and preconstruction work; pipelaying operations; aboveground sections; facilities to prevent permafrost damage; the ultimate capacity and present throughput; pump stations; the pipeline control system; valves and other provisions to limit drainage in the event of spills or leaks; the pipeline communications system, including a standby satellite system; the southern terminus at Valdez and its storage, berthing, ballast-water treating, powerplant, vapor-control, and administrative facilities; and the effects of North Slope crude on the U.S. economy.
