Real-time simulation of oil tanker operations in Valdez, Alaska
Crude oil is now being pumped through the TransAlaska Pipeline System (TAPS) from the North Slope at Prudhoe Bay to Valdez on Prince William Sound. The tankers which transport that oil from the pipeline's southern terminus at Port Valdez to the ''lower forty-eight'' average 120,000 deadweight tons.Ships of this size and type had not heretofore transited those Alaskan waters. This paper presents the original real-time simulation work as designed by the author and officials from the State of Alaska, with inputs from the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and various segments of the marine industry. It discusses the behavior of the man-controlled ship and describes the specific experiments conducted for the TAPS tanker operations at Valdez, Alaska.
