Real-time simulation of tanker operations for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System is discussed as carried out with the aid of the Office of the Pipeline Coordinator of the State of Alaska, the US Coast Guard, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and various parts of the marine industry at the Netherlands Ship Model Basin, including the behavior of the man-controlled ship, simulation in a general sense, real-time simulation in particular, the availability of real-time ship simulators, various real-time ship simulators, experimental design theory, specific experiments conducted for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System tanker operations at Valdez, Alaska, and conclusions from these experiments pertaining to the application and future value of such real-time ship simulators.
