Having undergone a 21-month planning stage, Australia's $4 billion North West Shelf LNG project now awaits the beginning of a 5-year construction task. To tap gas reserves in the North Rankin field, the project owners will erect two offshore platforms capable of producing about 1.7 billion CF (45 million m/sup 3/)/day. Raw gas and condensates will flow to shore via an 81.2-mile pipeline. An onshore plant will process up to 400 million CF (10 million m/sup 3/)/day of gas for local use; liquefaction facilities will produce 6.5 million tons/yr of LNG (equivalent to 340 billion CF of gas) for export to Japan and possibly the US West Coast. The plant will also produce about 14 million bbl/yr of condensate. A fleet of seven 125,000 m/sup 3/ tankers will serve the Japanese LNG trade, with five more tankers added later if the US becomes a buyer. Timely conclusion of 20-year sales contracts will bring the export gas to market by 1985.
