The North West Shelf LNG project, Australia's biggest financial undertaking at $4 billion, has completed its 21 mo $50 million planning and design stage, and now awaits sales contracts to begin the 5 yr construction phase. Two production platforms will be built at 125 m water depths to tap the North Rankin gas resevoir, the first of the three shelf structures to be developed. Each platform, including topside facilities, jackets, and supporting piles, will weigh more than 45,000 tons; will be 230 m high from seabed to the top of the derrick, and will have deck dimensions of 40 x 60 m; it is designed to withstand cyclonic waves coming from any direction. A 130 km, l m dia pipeline will deliver raw gas and condensate from the field to the onshore plant at Withnell Bay. The onshore plant will produce up to 10 million cu m/day of sales-quality gas for the local market, and an additional 6.5 million tons/yr of LNG and 1.7 million tons/yr of condensate for export. Main capital outlay for the project will be for shipping, with between seven and twelve 125,000 cu m tankers being built to carry North West Shelf LNG.
