Investigations into the absorption of slow ..pi../sup -/ mesons by medium and heavy nuclei are reviewed. The latest experimental data in the study of a new physical phenomenon are reported: the excitation of high-spin nuclear states as a result of absorption of ..pi../sup -/ mesons. The single-nucleon mechanism of absorption of ..pi../sup -/ mesons is considered in connection with the problem of the existence in nuclei of a ..pi.. condensate and ..delta../sup + +/ baryon resonances. A method is explained for determining the relative probability of nuclear absorption of pions in chemical compounds from the induced radioactivity of the residual nucleus. The possibilities of applying this method in mesic chemistry are considered. The experimental data are analyzed in the framework of modern models of the process of absorption of ..pi../sup -/ mesons by nuclei.
