According to an FERC study of U.S. gas supply, residential customers and other high-priority natural gas users will not suffer shortages during the next two winters regardless of the severity of the weather. The FERC study is based on data from intrastate pipeline firms, which reported a 132 billion cu ft increase in projected deliveries over the winter of 1978-79; foreign sources, mainly Canadian, which have a potential supply of 40 billion cu ft of additional gas; the availability of less than or equal to 305 billion cu ft of intrastate gas and less than or equal to 120 billion cu ft via 60 day emergency sales; and increased availability from other emergency purchases, including sales from underground storage. The natural gas supply status of 27 major U.S. gas firms for the 1978-79 and 1979-80 winters is tabulated.
