A power generation system is described comprising: an electrochemical cell including a reactive metal anode, a cathode spaced from the anode, and an electrolyte comprising an aqueous solution of the hydroxide of the reactive metal; a source of an acid anhydride which reacts with the electrolyte to precipitate at least one insoluble compound of the reactive metal; means for contacting the electrolyte with the acid anhydride to form at least one insoluble compound of the reactive metal; means for separating the insoluble compound from the electrolyte; and means for recirculating the separated electrolyte to the electrochemical cell.
