A power generation system is described comprising: an electrochemical cell including a reactive metal anode, a cathode spaced from the anode, and an electrolyte comprising an aqueous solution of the hydroxide of the reactive meal; a source of at least one complex comprising a hydrogen fluoride adduct to fluoride salt which upon contact with the electrolyte precipitates at least one compound of the reactive metal which is insoluble in the electrolyte; and means for contacting the electrolyte with the complex to form at least one compound of the reactive metal which is insoluble in the electrolyte.
