Book ·
OSTI ID:6862060
A total of 154 gas utility companies - representing 86% of US residential gas customers - responded to A.G.A.'s 1980 homeheating survey. The collection of data revealed that (1) the number of residential gas comsumers increased 1.4% to 43.7 million (88% of them heating customers), (2) new heating units totaled just under 1.1 million (47% in new housing and 53% from conversions), (3) conversions from other fuels (primarily oil) to gas rose 60% to 583,000 units, the highest level ever recorded in a single year, (4) natural gas retained its lead in the heating-fuel market with a 55% share, (5) the level of residential hookup restrictions continued to decline, and (6) due to fewer housing starts, manufacturers' shipments of residential gas heating equipment dropped slightly - although gas-boiler shipments rose 33%, furnaces were down 22% - while shipments of oil-fired heating equipment showed even greater losses.
