Gas house heating survey: 1979. Present and prospective house heating customers

A total of 152 gas utility companies - representing 83% of US residential gas customers - responded to A.G.A.'s 1979 home heating survey. The collection of data revealed that (1) the number of residential gas consumers increased 1.2% to 43.1 million (87% of them heating customers), (2) new heating units totaled 957,100 (62% in new housing and 38% from conversions), (3) conversions from other fuels (primarily oil) to gas rose 155% to 365,400 units, the highest level since 1969, (4) natural gas retained its lead in the heating-fuel market with a 55% share, (5) the level of residential hookup restrictions continued to decline, and (6) manufacturers' shipments of residential gas heating equipment rose again - gas boilers up 76% and furnaces up 14% - while shipments of oil-fired heating equipment fell.
