Estimate of costs and payback periods of residential oil-to-gas conversions

Book ·
OSTI ID:6704339
To define the economics of converting from an oil-fired residential heating system to a gas-fired one, A.G.A. compared the costs and payback periods for conversions in five US cities representing the regions where most oil-to-gas conversions are occurring. The total representative cost of equipment plus installation currently ranges from about $800 for a gas-conversion burner and $1200 for a new gas furnace, up to about $1900 for a new gas boiler. Payback periods are 1-5 years, depending upon the region and the individual requirements for equipment. The study suggests that over a 10-year period, converting from oil to gas will save the average homeowner as much as $9500 because natural gas is forecast to be 20-50% cheaper than fuel oil through 1990 in most regions.
