Heat recovery pinched by rising costs, payback

A lack of capital and unacceptably long payback periods have kept manufacturers from investing in waste-heat-recovery equipment in spite of the energy-saving opportunities. The first costs of heat-recovery equipment are high because of the temperature and hostile conditions associated with the recovery process and equipment installation. These costs push payback periods to 10 and 12 years, while most firms allow no longer than three-year paybacks. Other costs are due to custom designing for specific installations. One application which is proving successful is recovery of low-grade heat from refrigerating exhaust that can be used to raise tap water temperatures. A directory of major heat recovery equipment manufacturers is listed.
