Evaluation of trends in the househeating market. [Monograph]

According to new estimates of the number of gas househeating units, natural gas continues to heat more residences in the U.S. than any other fuel. Some 42.3 million househeating units of the over 74 million total househeating units in the U.S. used gas at year end 1977. This analysis examines the trends in the househeating market, with particular emphasis on the factors affecting the market share of gas. It is concluded that while the rate of growth of gas househeating units has declined significantly since 1973, principally due to the imposition of restrictions on expanded use of gas, the share of the househeating market represented by gas has continued to grow. The continued growth in market share of gas is attributable to the continued increased use of gas in new housing markets in the less restricted but rapidly growing regions of the South and West, and the continued preference for gas in the conversion market in those areas where conversions of existing househeating units from alternate fuels to gas are permitted. The continued strength for gas since 1973 in those areas where permitted demonstrates that there exists a clear preference for gas whenever it is offered as a househeating fuel. (MCW)
