Current status of woody biomass production research in Florida

Conference · · Soil Crop Sci. Soc. Fla., Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6858368
Woody biomass is the predominant biomass resource in Florida, and the potential for increasing wood availability is high. Research on the development of woody biomass production systems and on preparation and utilization of woody biomass is a major effort within the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida. A broad based examination of silvicultural factors - species, spacing, site amendment, and genetic variation - involving over 60 species and 17 test locations in the state is combined with economic, energetic, and environmental assessments to determine feasibility of silvicultural biomass farms. Simultaneous efforts to identify methods of preparing woody biomass for processing and to establish procedures for deriving energy or chemicals may lead to viable alternative uses of forest and non-forest lands. 12 references.
