Harvesting of close-spaced short-rotation woody biomass

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6207459
The objective of this project is to investigate alternative strategies and techniques of harvesting which appear to be commercially viable for use on closely spaced short-rotation biomass farms where coppicing will be used. Efforts to date have been concerned with identifying the characteristics of prospective woody biomass farms. Appendix I contains a summary of requirements for harvested wood used as feedstock for various conversion processes. The characteristics of harvesting, collecting, transporting, and storing equipment as used by the forest products and agricultural industries are described in this report. The applicability of the foregoing equipment to close-spaced, short-rotation biomass farms is discussed. The harvesting operation associated with supplying a single large wood conversion plant has been modelled to acheive the lowest cost system. (DMC)
