Strip mining and the environment

Journal Article · · Natl. Parks Conserv. Mag.; (United States)

Never has there been an industry so badly in need of regulation as the coal industry. Because stripmining is the cheapest method of coal removal, the industry has adroitly avoided EPA control standards and continues its efforts to block tougher stripmining regulations. Coal companies are pushing to permit industries to use higher sulfur content fuel without having to install adequate scrubbing devices. Newly-developed techniques, such as replacement of topsoil as mining progresses, and the revegetation of stripmined slopes are discussed. (1 photo)
