Reclaiming mined land in illinois for row crop production

Journal Article · · J. Soil Water Conserv.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5609518
Illinois law requires topsoil to be replaced on stripmined land suitable for row crop agriculture. But in several studies prior to 1966 and dating back to 1948, yields equaled or exceeded county averages for row crops after stripping and without topsoil return. In 1974, the Peabody Coal Co. began to determine the value of replacing topsoil for corn production. This work and further restoration pratices to operate a mine in Randolph County are described. Newly mined lands should not be planted immediately to corn, but row crops can unquestionably be grown on land that has been stripmined for coal. (2 photos, 3 tables)
