Crop yields on native soils and strip mine soils: comparison

Journal Article · · J. Soil Water Conserv.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6690322
A national survey about mineland productivity sought comparisons of crop yields before and after stripmining operations. Corn yields before and after stripmining operations. Corn yields on mine soils were 4-90% less than on adjacent native soils, depending on topsoil applications, age, and special treatments of reclaimed areas. Corn yield data from several states are tabulated. Yield reduction from stripmined land can be large or small, depending on spoil qualities and reclamation procedures.
