Stripmining is the most economical mining method for most western low sulfur coal. Stripmined land can be revegetated and reclaimed, but the degree of success will depend on site-specific factors. USDA research on factors limiting productivity on revegetated land is reviewed. Water quality and quantity; soil nitrogen content; seeding methods; erosion problems; fertilizer management; and soil sodium content are investigated.
